Florida Caverns State Park offers much more than the limestone caves. This park in the Florida Panhandle also has swamps, rivers, campgrounds and trails. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling and swimming are popular activities in the park. The Chipola River is the main river in the park with several creeks flowing into it.
When exiting the cave, you can take a short trail back to the visitor center or take the longer route back. The longer route only adds about 15 minutes to the return. The park is far enough north in Florida that the higher trails in this part of the park go through a hardwood forest. These trails near the cave visitor center are hiking only. This photo is from Beech Magnolia Trail which is one of the trails on the bluff above and around the cave.

Further into the park the elevation drops, but even a small change in elevation creates a noticeably different environment in Florida. There is a place where the Chipola River goes underground. It reappears a few hundred feet downstream. Depending on the water level, it may or may not completely disappear underground.

This cypress swamp is on the Muddy Branch of the Chipola River next to the park's main road.
